Dr. Evangelos Bekiaris

 

The Director of HIT, Evangelos Bekiaris, is a PhD Mechanical Engineer of the National Technical University of Athens, former Research Director (Grade A Researcher) and former Head of the sector “Driver & Vehicle”. He has participated in over 100 research projects up to date, in 35 of which has led all the research consortium. His field of expertise covers issues of road safety, clean vehicles, smart grid applications, specialized telematics applications for vehicles, public transport and maritime transport. He has also profound experience in accessible transportation and personalized services for disabled people and elderly.

 

He has been/is:

 

  • Editor and co-author in 6 scientific books and with 68 publications in international scientific journals and 252 presentations in international conferences.
  • National Representative for the HORIZON 2020, Smart, Green and Integrated Transport Programme Committee.
  • Vice-President of the European Association for Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (AVERE - www.avere.org) from 2014 until today.
  • President of the European Association HUMANIST European Centre of Excellence in Human Machine Interaction (HMI) in Transport (www.humanist-vce.eu  ) from 2012 until 2015.
  • Chairman of the Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI - www.fersi.org) from 2008 until 2011.
  • Board member of the Hellenic Researchers Union, from 2012 until 2015.
  • Editor-in-Chief of the European Transport Research Review – An Open Access Journal (ETRR) of Springer.
  • Visiting Professor in Transport Telematics at the Mechanical Engineering department of University of Trento (Italy), as well as visiting Professor, at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK).
  • He has also teached Transport Telematics in a Master course of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) from 2003 to 2011.

Prof. George Giannopoulos

Mr. George A. Giannopoulos is Director of the Hellenic Institute of Transport of the National Center for Research and Technological Development (CERTH) since its founding in 2000 and member of its Board of Directors since then and Vice-president since November 2008. Since August 2010 he is President of the CERTH and Director of its Central Administration.

Until July 2010 he was professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where he was Director of the Laboratory of Transport Engineering for 20 years, and Director of the Postgraduate course on Transport Systems for 10 years.

He studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (Diploma of civil engineering) and Transportation Planning and Engineering at Imperial College University of London (PhD, DIC, and M.Sc degrees).

Since 1989 he is continuously representing Greece in various Committees, working groups, and other bodies of the EU (indicatively: the DRIVE and the Advanced Transport Telematics programme in the 90s, the ISTAG, SST, ERTRAC, and EIRAC, more recently). Since 2008 he is chair of the Transport Advisory Group of DG RTD and MOVE.

He has been deputy of the Greek Minister of Transport at the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (today International Transport Forum – ITF of the OECD), and head of Greece s delegation for the negotiations between Greece and the European Economic Community for Greece’s entry as a member.

In 1997 he founded, and was until 2004 chairman, of the South East European Transport Research Forum (SETREF) an international non-governmental Organization devoted to promoting transport research in South East Europe, with more than 30 organizations members in 12 countries of the area.

He is founding member and first President (for 2003 – 2007) of the European Conference of Transport research Institutes ( ECTRI) an Organization with 27 members – major European Transport Research Organizations established in almost all European countries.

He has been awarded several international distinctions among which:

  1. Honorary PhD of the University of Kingston, London, UK.
  2. Certificate of Appreciation from the US Transportation Research Board (US Academy of Sciences).
  3. Personality of the year (2006) award from the Network of Black Sea Universities.

He is the author of more than 150 publications in scientific magazines, and of 10 books 2 of which in English.

Areas of interest / expertise: Transport Planning, Transport Policy, Freight transport / logistics, public transport systems, and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) applications.

Dr. Georgia Aifadopoulou

Civil Engineering specializing in Designing and Management of Transport Systems. Postgraduate Studies in Informatics, University of PARIS VII and Transportation Planning and Engineering of the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chausees. PhD thesis on the «Implementation of expert systems and techniques on fleet routing and scheduling problems of transport fleets». Civil Engineering Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Professional and research expertise in the following sections: Traffic Management, Transport Systems Management, Use of Telematics Applications in: Maritime, Road and Combined Transport, GIS, Vehicle Fleet Management, Operations Research and in Road Safety.

Her professional experience covers a wide range in studies with subjects relate to maritime transports, port infrastructure management, new technologies application for maritime transportation systems’ management emphasizing on the safety and reduction of environmental impacts.

She has been assigned as Project Coordinator, Technical and Evaluation Manager for several EU as well as Greek projects, the most significant one of which was the EU (DG XIII) funded POSEIDON project, which aimed at the study of users’ needs, the new technologies’ potentials and the general architecture for the development of the Vessel Traffic Services Systems at European level. Her experience also includes her involvement as Quality Assurance Manager for the European Research projects «IMAGE - Intelligent Mobility Agent for complex Geographic Environments» (2001-today) and “WORKFRET - WORKing cultures in the face of intermodal FREight Transport systems” (1997-1998). At present she acts as the Technical Manager of “IMONODE (INTERREG IIIC programme) - Efficient Integration of Cargo Transport Modes and Nodes in CADSES area” which aims at the development of efficient intermodal transport systems in SE Europe with regards to sustainable development. The IMONODE project aims at studying the options and suggesting solutions including new technologies application for the optimization of intermodal transport chains development and operation in SE Europe. The Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works assigned to her the coordination of «The Business Plan for the Road Safety for the Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works» (2002-today).

She has been working on different European research projects related to new technology application for transport chains management and control (included intermodal transport) and was responsible for system functionalities specifications, pilot implementation, evaluation and acted as project coordinator for various Greek Transportation (road, maritime, combined transports) Studies.

She has written over 30 scientific papers that have been published in Greek and foreign magazines and were presented in Greek and international conferences.

Dr. Maria Boile

Dr. Maria P. Boile is Research Director at the Hellenic Institute for Transportation (HIT), Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) and Director of HIT’s Athens Office. She received her diploma in Civil Engineering with specialization in Transportation Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 1990, M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Rutgers University in 1992, and Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1995.

 

Prior to joining HIT Dr. Boile held appointments as Associate Professor of transportation in the Department Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Rutgers University since 2007, co-Director of the Freight and Maritime Program (FMP) at the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) since 2005, and academic fellow in the Center for Supply Chain Management of the Rutgers School of Business since 2005. She also served as Assistant professor in the CEE department at Rutgers University (2000-2007), Assistant Professor with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lafayette College (1995 – 2000) and Visiting Assistant Professor with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and National Center for Transportation and Industrial Productivity, New Jersey Institute of Technology.

 

Dr. Boile’s areas of research and interest include passenger and freight intermodal network modeling, freight logistics, freight and maritime systems analysis, port and inland terminal operations, transit scheduling and operations. She has participated in over 50 sponsored research projects, as a principal investigator in 30 of them. Her research has been funded by the European Commission programs as well as by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, NJ DOT, NYSDOT, PennDOT, New York Metropolitan Transportation Council.

 

She has authored and co-authored over 150 scientific journal and conference articles, reports and book chapters. Dr. Boile has received several honors and awards, has been a member of two editorial advisory boards and is serving as a reviewer to eight international journals. She is a member of several professional societies, serves as a member on various committees and scientific and professional boards, and has been an invited expert by the US Department of Transportation and the European Commission. Dr. Maria Panou

Dr. Maria Panou is currently holding a position as a Principal Researcher and Head of Department ‘Vehicle & Driver – Transport Safety – Accessibility’ at the Hellenic Institute of Transport of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. She has a PhD on Personalised ADAS warnings for drivers and infomobility services for travellers. Her main fields of expertise are innovative technologies for road safety and mobility in transport, ADAS warning algorithms, HMI and C-ITS applications, Transportation technologies for elderly and persons with special needs, innovative simulation training tools for driving simulators ICT for all.

She has strong experience in managerial and supervisory tasks as she has acted as Coordinator/technical manager in successful projects of the 6th & 7th FP, as well as ongoing H2020 projects.

She is a Member of the Editorial Board of the ETRR Journal (European Transport Research Review – An Open Access Journal) of ECTRI.

Dr. Maria Morfoulaki

Dr. Maria Morfoulaki is an Operational Scientist A’, working at CERTH-HIT since 2001. She is the head of the Laboratory “Demand and Mobility Management and Development of Sustainable Mobility Systems” of HIT. She is a Transportation Engineer having a great experience on Transportation Planning Models, Public Transport Operational and Quality issues and Urban Sustainable Transport issues.

She obtained her diploma as a Civil Engineer from the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1995, while in 2004 she presented her Ph.D in the field of Public Transport Quality Measures. In 2010 she acquired her MSc diploma on Systems’ Simulation from the University of Thessaly.

Her professional experience covers a wide range of studies and research programs with subjects related to urban mobility issues, traffic management, transportation master plans, transportation planning using simulation analysis and transportation systems’ management emphasizing on the quality, the safety and the reduction of environmental impacts.

The most recent expertise, is focused on the development of Sustainable Mobility Plans (SUMPs). She participated in the National Commission for the development of the Sustainable Mobility Plans’ specifications, which was organized by the Greek Ministry of Transport while in parallel, she led the project of HIT, which offered technical support to the Green Fund in order to select the 150 Municipalities that were financed for developing their SUMPs.

She is an author and co-author of many papers that were published in scientific journals or conferences’ proceedings while she is participating-representing HIT - in many committees of scientific and other transport related organizations, such as UITP, POLIS, CIVITAS, ECTRI.

Dr. Evangelos Mitsakis
Dr. Evangelos Mitsakis is Senior Researcher of the Hellenic Institute of Transport.
He holds a diploma in civil engineering and a doctorate degree (PhD) in transport engineering.
His interests cover two main research lines. The first one include Intelligent Transport Systems, both at traffic management and control and at traveler information level, while in the recent years he works on Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). The second research line is related to impact assessment of climate change on transport systems and networks.
He participates in several R&I projects, several results of which have been implemented in the city of Thessaloniki. He is the author of several scientific publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He is member of committees and experts groups related to topics of Intelligent Transport Systems abroad (e.g. ERTICO, ECTRI, TRB and others) and in Greece, including the expert committees for the National ITS Strategy and National ITS Architecture. He is also elected president of the National Intelligent Transport Systems Association ITS Hellas.
Dr. Maria Gemou
Maria Gkemou is a Senior Researcher at CERTH/HIT and Head of Lab for Clean Vehicles and Technologies and of Lab for Intelligent Materials and Manufacturing in Transport. She is a Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineer with a PhD on Modeling of driving behaviour in driving simulator and correlation with real traffic conditions. Her main fields of expertise are namely: ITS, IST, driving simulation, sustainable mobility solutions, clean vehicles and technologies, pilot trials design, Dangerous Goods transport safety, training in transport field. She works at CERTH/HIT since 2003, she is currently Technical Manager in 2 H2020 projects, has participated on administration and technical level in more than 15 research projects in the past and is author of over 50 publications in refereed journals, books, and conferences.
Dr. Afroditi Anagnostopoulou

Dr. Afroditi Anagnostopoulou is an operational researcher at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) / Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), experienced in project management and transport economics overseeing the “Economic and Social Impacts of Transport Systems” laboratory. Her research interest lies in the areas of operational research, transport economics, supply chain and logistics. She participates in several research projects and she focuses on the development of advanced and sophisticated optimization algorithms for complex real-life transport problems.

She holds a BSc in Management Science and Technology from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and an MSc in Computer Science from the University College London (UCL). She has also received a PhD in Operations Research from the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

She is a member of the Hellenic Operational Research Society (HELORS) and the Economic Chamber of Greece (ECG). She is also a research fellow in the Operations Research & Decision Systems Centre (ORDeS) of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Evangelia Gaitanidou
Evangelia Gaitanidou has a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki, Greece, where she also obtained her MSc on “Planning, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems” and is currently a PhD Candidate in Road Safety. She works in the Hellenic Institute of Transport since 2004, as a Researcher, head of the Vehicle Safety laboratory (2009-2012), the Clean Vehicles laboratory (2012-2014) and the Road Safety and Security laboratory (2014-present). She has so far participated in more than 20 EU funded projects in FP6 (IN-SAFETY, ASK-IT, AIDE, PReVENT, SUPREME, HUMABIO, RIPCORD-ISEREST, PEPPER, DRUID), FP7 (TeleFOT, ACCESS2ALL, 2DECIDE, BESTPOINT, FOTsis, VERITAS, REMOTE, SOLUTIONS) and in Horizon 2020 (SocialCar, RESOLUTE, AUTOPILOT) in most of which holding a significant role (assistant Coordinator/Technical Manager, Quality Manager, WP/Task leader). Konstantinos Kalogirou
Kostas Kalogirou, (BSc in Software Engineering, MSc in Digital Signal Processing at Communication Systems) is Research Associate of HIT.

K.Kalogirou was born in Veria in 1978 and he has graduated from University of U.C.E in Birmingham in 2000. In 2001, he got his MSc in D.S.P. from Lancaster University, Department of Communication Systems (U.K.) with scholarship. He is specialised in designing and developing software applications in many programming languages (C, C++, Java, Web standards, Android, iOS) in many fields such as smart phone devices, vehicle area, wireless communications, home automation and distributed systems. He has participated in many European research and industrial projects. Dimitris Margaritis

Mr. Dimitris Margaritis, BSc in Automotive Eng, MSc in Environment Protection, and graduate of the Pedagogical and Technological Education institute. He is also PhD and Dipl.-Ing. Mechanical Engineer candidate, both at AUTh.

He is a Research Associate primarily in the area of Traffic Safety and Transport Greening. Since 2006 he works at CERTH/HIT. He is in charge of the “Environmental and Energy Impacts of Transport Systems” Lab and responsible for maintaining the ISO 9001-2008 quality system.

From 1999-2006 he worked for the Crash Safety department at TNO Automotive in The Netherlands. He contributed to the establishment of the first in-depth accident research team in The Netherlands. Among his accident analysis activities, he participated in EuroNCAP crash tests and he was also doing video analysis of vehicle crash tests and of vehicle safety features tests.

He has been involved in more than 35 national (Greek and Dutch) and EU research projects. He jointed networks such as EEVC WG21, APSN, and was the national representative in ITF/OECD Working Group on Motorcyclists Safety. He joins ETSC, CARE, ECTRI TWG-B, EGVIA, EEA and HELIEV (a member of AVERE).

Dr. Jose Salanova

Dr. Salanova was born in Barcelona in 1983 and graduated from the Polytechnic School of the University of Catalonia (U.P.C.), Department of Civil Engineer in 2007. In 2008-2009 he acquired the MSc on Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems of the Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki. In 2010-2013 he conducted his PhD research in the Polytechnic School of the University of Catalonia (U.P.C.) with dissertation title “modelling of taxicab fleets in urban environment”. Currently he is finalizing the Data Science Specialization at the Johns Hopkins University. The year 2007 he worked for the CENIT (Center for Innovation in Transport) in Barcelona. He works in the Hellenic Institute of Transport since 2008, where he is leading the “Data collection and processing, algorithm design, and use of specialized transport software packages” laboratory. His scientific interests concern research and developments in transport and mostly in algorithm and model development, mobility, intermodal transport and logistics as well as Data Science and Big Data at the transport domain. He speaks fluently Catalan and Spanish and very well Greek and English.


Eleftherios Sdoukopoulos
Eleftherios Sdoukopoulos was born in Larisa, Greece in 1984. He is a Dipl. Rural & Surveying Engineer, graduate of the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - AUTh (2008), and MSc Transport Engineer, after successfully completing, in 2009, AUTh’s Master Programme entitled ‘Design, Organization and Management of Transport Systems’ (1st grade award). Since 2014, he is also a PhD Candidate at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, with his doctoral thesis focusing on port-hinterland relationships and interactions within the context of global supply chains. In 2010, he started working as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport and since then he has participated in several research projects and studies, funded under different European, regional and national programmes. His main research interests lie in the fields of maritime transport, design, management and operation of ports and marine terminals, port-city relationships and interactions as well as multi-modal port-hinterland systems. Athanasios Tsioutras
Athanasios Tsioutras was born in Thessaloniki and graduated from the Polytechnic School of AUTh, Department of Civil Engineer. He has got an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Issues from the Physics Department of A.U.Th. He has been a PhD Cand. Transport at Civil Engineer School of AUTh.
 During 1991-1996 he worked in the field of communication, advertising and sales promotion as a freelancer in advertising agencies and printed media. Since 1996 he is working in the Transport field in many research programs and transport studies (over 40) first with consulting companies, then with the AUTh and after 2000 with NTUA. He is also very experienced in classic civil engineer issues, such as building construction and real estate estimations (over 1200).
 Since 2001 he is a research associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), where in 2004 he became HITs public relations manager, having contributed to almost 400 publicity actions and making HIT’s brand name. He has organized over 55 exhibitions promoting research results to the public and gave 220 interviews in mass media. During 2001-2007 he was the general responsible for the great part of the mobile research equipment of HIT, such as the research vehicle equipped with ADAS, the hybrid vehicle, the 2 driving simulators and the 4 electric assisted scooters.
 Between early 2011 – mid 2013 he was in charge of the newly established CERTH’s Press Office, which within this period recorded over 2000 views of CERTH in printed and electronic media, half of them followed up by CERTH’s Press Office.
 His main priority was to improve road safety in Greece through campaigns and educational activities on the human factor, the main responsible for road accidents. During 2010, he has been the technical coordinator of the implementation of BOB-Campaign in Greece with the title “Alcohol-Not Tonight-I am driving”. The combined effort of both police tests and BOB-Campaign, managed to reduce the positive alcohol breath tests from 8,3% (2000), to 3,2% (2004), according to statistical issues from the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection. This effort is being continued by HIT and other organizations since nowadays, unofficially. The cooperation with the famous Greek pop-singer George Tsalikis was the fabulous conclusion of this great ten years effort.
 The integration of theoretical and practical knowledge and manpower to defend and promote road safety was an imperative necessity. The beginning was the development of a network of researchers, transport engineers, driving instructors, journalists in car magazines and racing drivers in 18 educational seminars, in order to provide road safety throughout seminars all over Greece under the framework of the “ADHRITO” project. A book relative to new concepts of training such as multimedia and driving simulators has been published recently in which he is co-author.
 At academic level, A. Tsioutras has contributed in three books relative to traffic education for High Schools and 19 scientific publications in congresses and workshops, meanwhile he participated in 13 deliverables. He has been a member in the organizing committee of 9 international conferences and contributed to the finalisation of many research deliverables, including his research activity for a specific time in the field of Solid Mechanics, working for the environmental influence in microcracks of Thessaloniki’s monuments. He has held around 240 interviews to the media and has organized over 60 research profile events to the public. He speaks and writes English and has also excellent knowledge of many PC software programs.
 He is a member of the Hellenic Society of Transport Engineers, member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, member of the Society of the Registered Contractors of National Works of Thessaloniki and Central Macedonia, member of the Society of Civil Engineers of Thessaloniki and member of the Hellenic Electric Vehicles Association. Stella Nikolaou

Stella Nikolaou was born in 1976 in Athens, Greece. She is a software programmer and she is involved in the research team of the Hellenic Institute of Transport dealing with driver behaviour monitoring and human factors impact on road safety.

She has been involved in various national and European research projects, whereas her main research focus includes the monitoring of the driver behaviour for the enhancement of road safety through the use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), studies of human sleep for safety enhancement in industrial applications and the reduction of accidents attributed to operator’s lack of alertness, as well as the development of high-end user interfaces for several industrial applications.


Anna Kortsari

Annie Kortsari is a research associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. She holds a degree in civil engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Macedonia, Greece. She is currently a PhD candidate in the area of railway transport with her Thesis focusing on railway freight transport between Europe and Asia. She has been working in the Institute since 2005 and has participated in numerous research projects and transport studies. Her expertise is on railway transport systems, mobility management, seasonal transport demand management, and intelligent transport systems. She is the author of many scientific papers.

Evaggelia Chrisohoou

Mrs. Evangelia Chrisohoou is an associate researcher at the Center for Research and Technology Hellas / Hellenic Institute of Transport since 2006. She is a mathematician with an MSc in “Statistics and Operational Research”. She is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at School of Engineering of University of Thessaly, in the field of optimization problems. Her research interests are in transportation planning and management; operational research applied in transportation problems fleet management and logistics; as well as statistical analysis of big traffic data and passively collected datasets relates to travel behavior and mobility schemes. Her work has been published in international academic journals (such as Journal of the Transportation Research Board) and presented in international conferences (such as Transportation Research Board Annual Meetings TRB, European Conference on Operational Research EURO - INFORMS). 



Bartholomew-Michael Vassilantonakis

Bartholomew-Michael Vassilantonakis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1976 and holds a Bachelor’s degree BEng in Control and Computer Systems Engineering, from the University of Westminster in London, as well as an MSc in Computer Systems & Networks, from South Bank University in London.

At the same time worked at several companies, in London area, as technician and then as computer systems and networks, engineer and administrator. By returning to his home country worked as IT Supervisor at an international company on consumer research.

Since 2006 he works at H.I.T. as IT and application development supervisor with main tasks the well-functioning of IT and networks infrastructure, the development and implementation of IT policies, the supervision of procurement and subcontracting for IT equipment (Hardware/Software) and supervision, design and development for software application (Web, Apps & Desktop) for H.I.T.’s projects as a developer. He has been involved in several European, transnational and domestic projects in different fields many of which involved in mobility management, freight, ITS and ICT.

Over the years, he gained experience in Software Engineering and Development as well as in Data Management Systems.

Relevant experience has been achieved in the field of transport observatories, freight and logistics and mobility systems with my engagement on several national and European ITS and platform oriented projects over the years in different fields of transportation systems. His involvement on those projects consist of the development of the appropriate services, integration of different systems, the database structure, architecture and design and data analysis for the development of the appropriate goal on each project.

His technical skills consist of use and management of several operating systems, servers and development tools, such as Windows Servers, Visual Studio, MS SQL Server, SharePoint, ArcGIS Server, MS Exchange, Systems Operations Management, VMWare e.t.c.. His programming and databases skills contains development and management of RDBMS in SQL Server, MySQL and development and usage in .NET (C#/VB.NET/ASP.NET), SQL, SQL Spatial, HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, AJAX, Google Maps/Charts API, Bing Maps API, Share Point, Java, PHP. The hardware technical skills consist of implementation, management, maintenance and problem solving of IT infrastructure such as server and workstations as well as networks infrastructure for routers, switches, firewalls e.t.c..


Pavlos Spanidis

Pavlos Spanidis was born in Veria in 1980. He is has graduated as a Software Engineer from Salford University of England (BSc in 2003) and he is specialized in Telecommunications (MSc in 2004) in software development for NOKIA cell phones in Symbian OS in Lancaster University of England. He speaks fluently English and well German. Katerina Touliou

Ms Katerina Touliou is an Experimental Psychologist with MSc on Research Methods in Psychology (2002). She is a PhD candidate in the Medical Informatics’ Department of the Medical School at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She is currently holding a position as a research associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas.

Main research interests: Sensory perception in drivers and riders; the role of attention and distraction in driving performance; the effect of medicines and alcohol in driving behaviour; human behaviour dynamics; development and implementation of research methodologies and experimental theories; conduction of experimental and laboratory studies; application of advanced statistical analysis to determine human factors’ effect on driving behaviour; human factors/user experience research, and usability testing methodologies specially designed for elderly and disabled.

She has participated in 20 European and national research projects. She is a Member of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Helen Chalkia

Ms. Eleni Chalkia, is a Civil engineer of the Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki with MSc in Transportation system management and design. Olga Gaitatzi
Olga Gkaitatzi is an Electrical and Computer Engineer graduate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds a master's degree in Advanced Computer and Communications Systems from the same University as well as a master's degree in Wireless Communications Systems of Brunel University.
Since 2009 she works as research assistant at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) and especially at HIT Research Institute. She has participated to more than 10 research projects of the Department A (Vehicle - Safety – Accessibility) of the Institute.
Her research interests include the analysis of driver behavior, the role of distraction in driving performance in various situations, analysis of usability of new software technologies designed for elderly users and people with various disabilities, through pilot and usability testing.
Panagiotis Tzenos
Panagiotis Tzenos was born in 1983. He graduated from the department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2005. In 2007, he obtained his MSc degree in Communications Systems and Technologies. In the past, he has worked as a software engineer for various companies and participated actively in both the design and coding phases of custom-built ERP and CRM systems. Since 2009, he is a research associate of the Hellenic Institute of Transport, with main specialized areas the algorithm design and analysis and software development.
 His professional and scientific background includes a wide knowledge on methods, languages and development tools (UML, ANSI-ISO C/C++, .NET Framework, etc.), excellent command of traditional DBMS (MSSQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite), N-tier data application design and development, Geographic Information Systems (T-SQL Spatial, ESRI ArcGIS, GeoServer), web applications (JS and frameworks, CSS / HTML) and services (SOAP, RESTful) design and development, as well as the initial setup and continuous management of local networks’ architecture/infrastructure (Virtualization Technologies, Active Directory, Windows Server, Linux).

Glikeria Myrovali
Myrovali Glykeria, Dipl.Civil Engineer AUTh- Msc in Transport, works as a research associate of Hellenic Institute of Transport from March 2010. Born in Thessaloniki in 1986, she graduated from the Polytechnic School of AUTh, Department of Civil Engineer. She acquired an MSc diploma in Transport ("Design, Organisation and Management of systems of means of transport") at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 2015 is a Ph.D. candidate in Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Thessaly on traffic data analysis and fusion for optimal calibration of transportation models. She has participated in a series of transport related projects (national, territorial and European). Among main fields of her expertise are Demand Management, Data analysis, Public Transport Systems enhancement, Road Safety and proposals for policies on Sustainable Urban Mobility. Stamatina Loukea
Ms. Matina Loukea, is a Psychologist of the University of Athens. She works as an Associated Researcher in the Hellenic Institute of Transport since 2010 and she has participated in EU projects since FP7. The main fields of research are accessibility in Transport and in Tourism, education and training issues of the European Transportation system, evaluation planning and testing, mainly in the context of pilot testing and results analysis during Research projects. Panagiotis Iordanopoulos
Panagiotis Iordanopoulos is a Civil Engineer – MSc Transportation Engineer. In 2009, he graduated from the Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and in 2010 he acquired his M.Sc. in Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems, Faculty of Technology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). Since 2015, he is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Economics of the University of Piraeus (UniPi) on the Economic assessment of Intelligent Transport Systems. He works as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport / Center for Research and Technology Hellas since 2010. He has participated in many European Transport Research Projects funded by various European mechanisms and in National and European Transport Studies. His research interests include among others, Intelligent Transport Systems, Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems, Transport Planning, Traffic Modelling, Transport Economics and Sustainable Urban Mobility. He has written more than 10 scientific papers that have been published either in international or Greek scientific journals and were presented in Greek and international conferences. He is also the co-author of 2 book chapters related to ITS and their evaluation.
Kornilia Maria Kotoula
Kotoula Kornilia Maria, Dipl. Rural and Surveying engineer, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), M.Sc. Transport Engineer is a research associate of the Hellenic Institute of Transport. In 1998, she graduated from the Department of Rural and Surveying Engineering, (AUTH), while in 2010 she acquired her MSc diploma on Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems from the same University, Departments of Civil Engineering and Rural – Surveying Engineering. In July 2015, she started elaborating her PhD thesis in the Department of Civil Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). The title of her PhD is: “Optimization of socially sensitive population groups’ transportation systems”. During 1999-2008, she worked as an employee in companies elaborating studies on bridge and road construction. Since 2010, she has been a research associate of the Hellenic Institute of Transport. She has participated in European and National research programs and Studies relevant to transportation issues. Her main fields of expertise are related to the Promotion and Strengthening of Sustainable Urban Mobility, the Design, Optimization and Evaluation of Public Transport Systems and Road Safety. As HIT’s member, she has also collaborated as a Technical Consultant with Municipalities, Regions and Ministries on issues related to the transport sector. She speaks fluently English and very well French and has publications in International and National Conferences and scientific journals.
Katerina Chrysostomou
Katerina Chrysostomou is a Civil Engineer – MSc Transportation Engineer.
 In 2009, she graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and in 2010 she acquired a M.Sc. in Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems from the same university. Since 2010 she works as a Research Engineer at the Hellenic Institute of Transport / Center for Research and Technology Hellas. She is also a PhD Candidate at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
 She has participated in various European and national transport research projects and studies and she is the author of more than 20 scientific papers that have been presented in international and Greek scientific conferences and journals. Her scientific interests include, among others, transport networks’ analysis and optimization, smart and sustainable mobility and application of new technologies in transport.
Maria Chatziathanasiou
Maria Chatziathanasiou was born in Athens, Greece, in 1980. She is a Civil Engineer of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.TH.), Greece, since 2005. In 2007, she acquired her MSc diploma on “Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems” from A.U.TH. Since 2005, she has worked, as a freelance civil and transport engineer, mostly in the field of public traffic, parking and environmental studies. Since November 2010, she works as a Research Associate in the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), of the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). Her research interest focuses mainly on the field of demand and mobility management, as well as in the development of sustainable mobility systems.
She is the author of many scientific papers. She is a proficient user of English, independent user of Spanish and basic user of German.
Aristides Halatsis

Aristides Halatsis is Dipl. Civil Engineer with post-graduate studies in Logistics (MSc in Logistics & Transportation) and Business Administration (MBA). He has more than 20 years of professional experience in the fields of freight transport & logistics, port operations/management, intermodal nodes & transport, and proven experience in managing & leading project teams, having worked with clients from both the private & public sector. He has served as a CEO of the Kavala Port Authority with main focus areas the development of the freight and cruise business. He has served as an External expert to the Marco Polo II Programme of the CEC, External Expert to the TEN-T Programme of the CEC, Evaluator to the Information Society Programme (ICT for Transport) of the CEC, Evaluator to the Smart Cities and Communities and Social Innovation Programme (Last Mile Logistics) – Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR), and Evaluator to the ERA-NET MARTEC (Maritime Technologies).


Dr. Nikos Dimokas

Dr. Nikos Dimokas obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2010. During August 2001 - December 2005 he worked as a research assistant in the Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). During September 2010 – September 2012 he worked as a visiting lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering of the University of Western Macedonia.  Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hellenic Institute of Transport of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. His research interests lie in the area of Distributed Systems and Data Management. In particular, his research focuses on distributed systems over wireless networks (wireless sensor networks, mobile ad hoc networks, vehicular ad hoc networks), mobile and pervasive computing with emphasis on data management and data dissemination,  mobile networks and applications, web information retrieval (social network analysis) and ambient intelligence framework services and their personalization, with emphasis on elderly and disabled users. He has participated in 6 European and national research projects. He holds 6 publications in international conferences, 2 in national conferences, 5 in scientific journals and 2 in book chapters.  He has also been a reviewer for many scientific journals and conferences like IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transaction on Multimedia Computing Communications and Applications, the Computer Journal, Wireless Networks etc. Finally, he has received over 210 citations from other scientific publication.


Ioannis Symeonidis

Ioannis Symeonidis is a Mechanical Engineer researcher.

His studies include the mechanical engineering diploma from AUTH- Thessaloniki, Master Rechereche in modeling and simulation of the musculoskeletal system from ENSAM- Paris, Ph.D. student with subject the study of head and neck biomechanics of motorcyclists before and during impact in the medical department of LMU- Munich while soon he is completing a Master of Science in Information Technology in HOU- Patras.

He has studied and carried out research in various EU institutions including the Technical University of Munich, the Polytechnic School of Milan, the CISAP team of the University of Florence, the IMFS institute of ULP in Strasbourg, the INRETS institute in Marseille, the TNO in Eindhoven and the ECIP institute of the University of Navarra among others. He has several publications in international scientific journals and conferences.

He is a Marie Curie fellow and responsible for the MC- CIG project ISABELLE. His research interests are in the field of biomechanics relative to two wheelers and light vehicle safety, biomechanics of impact, motion capture, motor rehabilitation and virtual reality and simulators.


Maria T Tsami

Mrs. Maria Tsami is a Spatial Planning and Development Engineer (MSc) and a PhD candidate in the department of Civil Engineering at the University of Thessaly. She is also holding an MSc degree in the field of Information and Communication Computer Systems, specializing in Intelligent Computer Systems. Since 2011, she is a scientific researcher of the Traffic, Transportation and Logistics Laboratory at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Thessaly, and since 2012, she is a scientific researcher of the Hellenic Institute of Transport. Her core research activity focuses on dynamic transit modeling taking into account information and quality of service indicators. She has been involved in numerous national and European projects and actions related to transportation planning and monitoring (urban-interurban), road safety, resilience management, social behavior of travelers, transit assignment and intelligent transportation systems. Dr. Alkiviadis Tromaras
Alkiviadis Tromaras was born in Thessaloniki in 1981. He has graduated from University of the West of England (UWE, Bristol) with a BEng in Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering. He continued his postgraduate studies at Coventry University studying the MSc of Competitive Manufacturing. In 2007 he completed his PhD in Manufacturing & Mechanical Engineering at Coventry University regarding stakeholder management and related environmental management issues of the UK’s Aerospace Manufacturing industry. Later on he worked in the Environmental Management and ISO14001 sector in the UK industry (Cummins UK) as well as research projects regarding environmental stakeholder management and environmental issues of sea ports or electric cars and charging infrastructure. He specialises in manufacturing and production, stakeholder management for environmental issues, Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001, charging infrastructure related to electric cars. Aggelos Aggelakakis

Aggelakakis Aggelos, born in Thessaloniki in 1982, is a Dipl. Engineer of Planning and Regional Development, graduating in 2005 from the corresponding department of the University of Thessaly. In 2007, he acquired his MSc diploma on “Planning, Organization and Management of Transport Systems” from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Since March 2007 and for specified periods, he was a research associate at the Transport Engineering Laboratory of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with participation in European and National Research Programmes. Panagiotis Liapis

Panagiotis Liapis has graduated from the Department of Economics of the Athens University of Economics and Business (formerly ASOEE) and holds an MSc in Maritime studies of the University of Piraeus, specializing in International Transport.

He has born in Piraeus in 1975.He graduated from the Lycée Léonin in 1993, a francophone non-profit private school and has been an active member of the Alumni Association since then. He holds the Diplôme D'études Françaises (Sorbonne II) and the Proficiency in English both from Cambridge and Michigan Universities.

He served in the Greek Army as a Cadet Officer where he served as a Controller of Expenditures from 1999 to 2001 when he has been dismissed with a recommendation letter for the quality of his services by his Chief commanding officer. Since 2001, he has been occupied in a private consulting firm as an economist, part of a study group responsible for data collection/processing and the preparation of cost benefit analysis studies in the Transport Sector.

Then, in 2004 he started his career in the Hellenic Institute of Transport, as an assisting financial officer on project monitoring and coordination in FP6 research projects, until 2008. At the same time, he attended the Post Graduate program in Maritime studies of the University of Piraeus where he graduated in 2007 as top in his class. He regained his position in the Hellenic Institute of Transport in 2014, after being occupied in several private companies in the insurance and car repairing sector, specializing in traffic accident compensation claims management.

Since then, he is in charge of the financial and administrative monitoring of FP7 research projects and participates in the preparation and submission of H2020 project proposals.


Elpida Xenou
Elpida Xenou was borne in Thessaloniki in 1987 and is working as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) since September 2014.
She is a graduate of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly and has acquired her MSc diploma on “Engineering and Construction Management” from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 2013 while at present attended as a scholar in the postgraduate programme “Logistics and Supply Chain Management” of the Department of Economics at the AUTh.
Her research activity focuses mainly on Intelligent Intermodal Freight Transport and Logistics and more specifically on the monitoring and management of national and European projects. Her main activities are the development of project deliverables, the collection and analysis of maritime and urban freight transport data and the capitalization of the projects outcomes. She is also an author of several announcements in national and international conferences.
Aristotelis Spiliotis
Mr Aristotelis Spiliotis is a Civil/ Structural Engineer having complete his postgraduate studies (Meng) from the Department of Civil Engineering, Surrey University UK and holds an MSc in Analysis and Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures from the department of Structural Engineering of the school of Civil Engineering at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is a Chartered Engineer in Greece since 2009.
 During his professional time he has worked both as a freelancer engineer in the private sector and also as an associate engineer in the public sector for several major public projects (design of special buildings, regeneration of large surrounding environments, etc.). He has been a collaborate engineer for the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR “Demokritos”) for 4 years were he was responsible for the smooth operation of particularly special buildings (nuclear reactor building, particle accelerator building and so on) and also supervised novel innovative projects. He has been an research associate at Hellenic Institute of Transport (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas) since February 2017. Christos Britsas
Chris Britsas was born in Tripolis.He is a graduate of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and has a master on Techno economic Systems of NTUA too. Since 2016 he works at the Hellenic Institute of Transport. During 2014-2016 worked as an official certificate in the project Openness-competition of enterprises for National Strategic Reference Framework*(NSFR) 2007-2013.During 2012-2014 he worked as a supervising engineer specialized in reinforcement, maintenance and restoration of several infrastructure buildings at Greece. As chief safety engineer in several projects he worked for the extension of Elephsina’s refinery during 2010-2012. During 2004-2010 he worked as a supervising engineer on several projects. Ioannis Alertas
Ioannis Alertas was born in Athens, in 1973. He acquired a diploma in Applied Arts as a Graphic Designer and he’s occupied as such since the late 1992. Initially employed in the field of advertising, he worked on many applications of classic graphic design, such as design of logo and corporate identity, print ads, packaging, book and leaflets layouts. He has participated in the creation and publication of comics and even provided original cartoons and illustrations to children’s books. Through the years, he transitioned to more contemporary areas, such as web design, interactive applications, animated graphics, UI design for mobile apps etc. Since 2008 and up to date, his main occupation was that of the design and development of e-Learning courses.
Miranda Maglavera
Mrs. Miranda Maglavera was born in 1992 in Thessaloniki. She has graduated from IIEK PASTER on the specialty Assistant Physiotherapist - EMPLOYEE laboratory PHYSIOTHERAPY, with work experience within the practice of exercise on 424 General Military Hospital of Thessaloniki. She has obtained a diploma in KINESIOTHERAPY through dancing movements from International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) and she is a physiotherapist with experience of 4 years working with athletes, people with disabilities and cognitive impairment. Since 2015 she is a research associate at HIT and she has been involved in various projects dealing with people with disabilities that require special knowledge in paramedics.
Ioannis Gragopoulos
Ioannis Gragopoulos was born in Thessaloniki in 1969. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1993 from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 1999 he received the PhD degree from the same university. He worked several years as a research and development engineer in industrial companies and research institutes, in the areas of telecommunication networks, vehicle telematics, navigation, embedded systems and sensor networks. He participated as main researcher in various European and National research projects. His research interests are mainly focused on embedded systems, hardware design, automotive sensors, IoT and software development.
Anna Manukyan
Anna Manukyan was born in 1992. She has graduated from Armenian State University of Economics with a degree in Business Administration. She has participated in an exchange program in Business Administration in Alexander TEI of Thessaloniki. Her theoretical knowledge was further expanded with practical skills in Marketing and business.
Anna is currently obtaining her master degree in Politics and Economics of contemporary Eastern and Southeastern Europe at the University of Macedonia. Since 2016 she carries out dissemination activities in CERTH-HIT and is involved in various projects.
Popi Vitzilaiou
Ms. Popi Vitzilaiou was born in Athens in 1985 and holds a BSc in Business Administration from University of Piraeus (2008). She is an Executive Secretary of the Hellenic Institute of Transport (H.I.T.) / Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. She has work experience in the implementation of NSRF projects and administrative support in private firms. She speaks fluently English and Spanish and is a basic user of the Japanese language. She is a member of the Economic Chamber of Greece.
Leonidas Parodos

Leonidas Parodos was born in Thessaloniki in 1987 and is working as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) since July 2017.

He is a graduate of the Business Administration Department of the University of Macedonia in 2010 and he obtained his M.Sc. in Maritime Logistics and Supply Chain Management from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2012.

Starting from 2013 he worked in Logistics companies especially in the field of national, international and multimodal transport as a Trade Lane Manager in South East Europe (EKOL Logistics).

His main business activity focuses on International and Urban Freight transport and Logistics. More specifically, in July 2017 he started working at the Hellenic Institute of Transport as a research associate. Since joining HIT he has been involved in various European projects related to green freight Logistics (AEOLIX, NOVELOG). His main responsibilities are the development of project deliverables, the collection and analysis of maritime and urban freight transport data and the capitalization of the projects outcomes.


Evangelos Mintsis
Evangelos Mintsis was born in Edessa, Greece, in 1984. He received the Dipl. Eng. degree in civil engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2009 and the M.Sc. degree in transportation engineering from University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA in 2012. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in transportation engineering at National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece. From 2009 to 2012, he was a Research and Teaching Assistant with the University of Florida Transportation Institute, Gainesville, FL, USA. From 2012 to 2013, he served his military service in Greece as a Civil Engineer. From 2017, he has been a Research Associate with the Hellenic Institute of Transport, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, Thessaloniki, Greece, where he was a Research Associate from 2013 to 2016. His research interests include traffic flow theory, microscopic traffic simulation, traffic management, intelligent transportation systems and connected and automated driving. Mr. Mintsis is a member of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers and of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He received an IKY/SIEMENS Research Projects for Excellence Scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) from 2015 to 2017.
Areti Kotsi
Areti Kotsi was born in Thessaloniki in 1990 and has been working as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) since July 2017. She is a graduate of the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and in 2016 she acquired a M.Sc. in Design, Organization and Management of Transportation Systems from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). She fulfilled her internship in the company INFOTRIP S.A. – Intelligent Transport Systems and she has worked as a transportation engineering consultant for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Her main research activity focuses on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and on Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). Since joining HIT she has been involved in R&I projects related to ITS and C-ITS. Her main responsibilities are the definition and evaluation of ITS and C-ITS requirements and specifications, as well as the design of the systems architecture and the performance of Cost Benefit Analysis. She is also an author of announcements in national and international conferences.
Kallirroi Porfyri
Kallirroi Porfyri was born in Athens, Greece, in 1987 and is working as a Research Associate at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) since September 2017. She received the Diploma degree in Production Engineering and Management and the M.Sc. degree in Manufacturing Systems from the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, in October of 2010 and in November 2012, respectively. From March of 2013, she is also a Ph.D. candidate at the same university with dissertation title “Traffic flow modelling in the Presence of Vehicle Automation and Communication Systems”. From 2012 to 2017, she was a research assistant at the Dynamic Systems and Simulation Laboratory (DSSL), Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, where she worked on several research projects regarding traffic flow modeling, model calibration, road traffic management as well as intelligent transportation systems. She has several publications in International Conferences and scientific journals.
